Capital Times reviewer Rena Archwamety Beyer says “This ‘Wilder Play Is A Perfect Match For APT’ . . . Love is an adventure, and so is outdoor theater. . .Thornton Wilder's ‘The Matchmaker’ . . . a bright, rich production of classic American theater, showcasing first-rate talent. . . The newcomers and longtime veterans in the production were all well-cast, and performances were consistently strong. Day was the standout. . . giving Dolly the perfect combination of spirited character, artful manipulator and devoted friend. . . . Director William Brown enhanced the sense of classic theater by incorporating songs by classic American songwriters throughout the play.” This is the play that inspired the Broadway Musical “Hello, Dolly.”

Mini Organ Recital by Wrede Smith on July 23 at 11 AM

Following the worship service on Sunday, July 23, Westminster's own Wrede Smith will present a mini organ recital. Although the title suggests he will be playing a mini-organ, the "mini" actually refers to the length of the recital, which he will offer on Westminster's Sanctuary Organ.

Wrede is the son of Bud and Lisa Smith and elder brother of Steve. Wrede graduated from Madison West High School in 2002 and earned his liberal arts degree this spring from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. Although music was not his major field of study, Wrede took organ lessons throughout his undergraduate career and most recently served as an organ intern at Gobin United Methodist Church in Greencastle.

Wrede has elected to serve in the Teach For America program, which is a national corps of outstanding recent college graduates of all academic majors who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in ensuring educational equity and excellence for all children. Wrede's intensive training program will last throughout the summer and he will begin his teaching assignment in St. Louis in August. During his limited time in Madison, he has agreed to share his music with us at Westminster .

The 30-minute recital, which will feature works by Bach, Franck, and others, will begin at 11:00 AM on July 23. After the worship service, please take time to enjoy a cup of coffee in Fellowship Hall and then return to the Sanctuary for this special program of music.

La Fiesta Vacation Bible School Report

To all the children, youth and adults who made La Fiesta Vacation Bible School so wonderful

Twenty children registered, with four neighbors & friends’ attending who were invited by WPC members.

Susan Bush & Liane Kosaki were super-duper co-directors, along with the tireless help from these folks:

Crafts: Beth Dohrn, Denise Meier

Bible Storytellers: Jennifer Meyer, Bud Smith, Carl Martin, and Marian Bauer

Shepherds: Ann Martin, Ruth Hein, Nancy Zellmer, Carolyn Curran, and Rachel Hostetler

Nursery: Nicole & Michelle Zebrowski, and Kathy DePaul

Kitchen Help: Roger & Kate Fletcher and Bill & Georgia Schmidt

Desserts: Lil Marsh, Cynthia Bush, Joyce DeSpain, and Ruth Hein

Making backdrops: Susan Bush, Julie Madden and Sue Bridson

Music: Liane Kosaki

Two mission projects were an important part of the VBS this year.  Special blankets were used, each painted with the English & Spanish versions of “Jesus Loves Me.”  These will be sent to the El Salvador home where our sponsored boy, Alex Ortiz, lives.  Although Henry & Roz Johnson could not attend VBS this year, they took one of the blankets home to tie the fringe which let them be a part of the mission project, too!  We wish to thank those congregational members who gave money to purchase a blanket, and did so in honor of loved ones...they are:

The second mission project will be completed after VBS. Backpacks will be filled with school supplies, health care items & comfort toys. Items can still be donated until July 2.; (the list is  posted in our narthex ).  The packs will then be sent to a Presbyterian church outside of New Orleans .  Marian Bauer is a collegue of their church educator, Sonia Lee, who provided us with the list of needed items.  Hurricane Katrina hit almost one year ago, but these types of needs continue. Gracias to all who helped with one or both of these projects.

One of their story times included a visit from Mrs. Zebedee, looking for fisherman who could replace her two sons, who quit to follow Jesus. Mrs. Joseph from Capernum visited to tell about her house which had a hole in the roof, all because four men had put their friend there to be healed by Jesus; Simon, a follower of Jesus, was found hiding in a cave from the Romans; and Ananias, who followed God’s call to help Saul in Damascus.

The children crafted too, making footprints in the sand, visors, picture frames & fun t-shirts with handprints.  Each Fiesta day started with a delicious meal; like tacos, chicken nuggets &  mac ‘n cheese, hot dogs & pizza, plus veggies, fruit and yummy desserts!

During music time we literally got into the swing of things. “Come on let’s have some fun…”  We learned a Bible point & Treasure verse each day.  The Bible points were: Jesus is our Leader, our Friend, our Savior, and our Helper.  If you say a phrase such asJesus is our Friendto any of the children who attended, their response should be Viva!”  Try it out some Sunday!

Summer Backyard Bible Study

Here's an excellent opportunity to meet new people and share ideas in a friendly, informal and stimulating social setting. From 7-8:30 PM on Tuesday evenings (7/11, 7/18, 7/25, 8/1, 8/8, and 8/15) this summer there will be gatherings at various homes, in backyards or on porches. Facilitating these studies will be Kathleen Cook Owens, McCormick seminary student. Kathleen has offered to lead a study on Faith Conversations - A Look At Talking About Faith With Our Neighbors From Other Christian Traditions. In past years we have studied Isaiah, First Corinthians, and more recently hosted two ecology groups.

We expect to keep our study & socializing to 1½ hours or less. You don’t have to forgo vacation trips or other events – just come when you can. Bring a folding chair in case it’s needed. Each host is asked to provide simple refreshments such as lemonade or iced tea and cookies. If you have limited space at your home to accommodate 12 to 15 people, you can co-host with someone else and provide the refreshments. For more information, contact Cynthia Bush or Ruth Hein (Adult Education Committee).

Summer Study Group  "Rethinking War, Rethinking Peace, Making Peace"

Coming July and August for five Sundays at 8:30 am, an adult study group will be formed to discuss the book, "Rethinking War, Rethinking Peace, Making Peace". This material was developed in collaboration with the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship. Bobbi Hargleroad, editor of Church & Society, strongly recommends this reading because "it has many thoughtful pieces to keep a group chewing for some time!"  Ed Daub will convene this study group. He plans to place the book order soon. The cost is $2.50 each if we order ten or more copies. Please contact Ed if you are interested in joining the group and getting a copy of the book.
