Christ the King Sunday

Preparation for Worship

Today we celebrate Christ the King Sunday, the last Sunday of the Liturgical year. Christ the King Sunday lifts up the often misunderstood metaphor of the kingship of Jesus the Christ. It is fitting that one of the texts at the heart of this worship is Luke's description of Jesus' crucifixion. While our images of kings are rooted in power and royalty, the cross represents a different kind of King.

We begin with the passage in Colossians as we proclaim in our opening sentences Christ as the image of God. We sing in our opening hymn, "Crown Him Lord of All!" The Prayer of Confession captures our unwillingness to give Christ our full allegiance. The hymn following the sermon expresses how Jesus "Humbled for a season, To receive a name From the lips of sinners Unto whom he came, Faithfully he bore it Spotless to the last." In our final hymn we sing the African American Spiritual "He is King of Kings" in which we acknowledge our following a king defined not by armies or regal power but by compassion and mercy to the poor, the lost, and the lonely.
